HANOVER,
PA, 9/5/08-Points leader Jeff Rohrbaugh raced like
it was going to rain.
It did, and the two-time
defending track champ came from 12th starting spot
to grab the race lead from Randy Whisler on lap 14
and become the all-time career feature winner in the
"358" sprint division at Trail-Way Speedway Friday
night.
Somehow, Rohrbaugh worked
his way through the field in an event which saw
seven caution flags and two red flags before the
rain arrived during a 16th-lap red flag for a Tim
Stallings flip on turn two which also collected Brad
McClelland. McClelland was running in the back after
going to the pits to change a tire when his B&D
Truck Hoist #6 was damaged during the earlier red
flag on lap eight.
The first red flag came out
when outside front row starter and race-long leader
Doug Hammaker got out of shape exiting turn four,
turned onto his side, and collected eighth-place
Colt White and tenth-place Billy Dietrich. White was
transported to the hospital with an arm injury and
all three cars were towed from the scene. McClelland
was also involved and kept moving, but stopped in
turn two during the red with a flat tire.
Whisler assumed the lead
for the ninth-lap restart, with Randy Davis, Jr.
second and Rohrbaugh third. Rohrbaugh got around
Davis for second on lap 12 and drove high in turns
three and four to get past Whisler for the lead to
complete lap 14.
Just after the leaders
passed the flagstand, the #4R of Davie Franek came
to a stop on turn four, bringing out the seventh
caution flag of the race. Rohrbaugh led one final
green flag lap before the final red flag came out
for Stallings.
Intermittent rain during
the feature got too heavy as the cars were lining up
for the 16th lap restart, and the field was sent to
the pits. With more than half the race complete,
promoters declared the race official five minutes
later.
The win moved Rohrbaugh one
win ahead of McClelland on the all-time win list
with 17.
Credited with second was
Whisler, with Davis third, Darren Schott fourth, and
Joe Trone, Jr. fifth. Completing the top ten were
Dale Hammaker, Tim Wagaman, Jessie Morrison, Mike
Duncan, and Brie Hershey.
Heats for the 26 "358"
sprints were won by McClelland, Whisler, and Dale
Hammaker.
With qualifying in for the
19 RMP thundercars on hand, the thundercar feature
was rescheduled for next Friday, September 12th.
Thundercar heats were won
by Will Walls and Dan Furman.
Heats for the 22 limited
stock cars were won by Chad Weaver and Brad Staub. A
make-up date for that feature will be announced.
