BILLY DIETRICH CLAIMS FIRST WIN SINCE SEASON

OPENER IN TRAIL-WAY "358" SPRINTS;

HANOVER, PA, 8/22/08-It was an eventful night for race winner Billy Dietrich in the "358" sprint feature at Trail-Way Speedway Friday night.

The older of the Dietrich brothers started seventh and was running fourth when the first of two red flags came out for the flipping sprinter of Joe Trone, Jr. on the backstretch of lap three. Trone turned it over exiting turn two and was uninjured.

Dietrich then raced wheel-to-wheel with fourth-starting Kyle Moody for three laps before making the pass into third on lap six.

All the while, outside front row starter Doug Hammaker was leading from the drop of the initial race green. Dietrich caught polesitter Nick Palmerino for second on lap eight. Over the next three laps, Dietrich closed on the leader.

On lap 12, Dietrich made an unusual pass for the lead when Hammaker’s car got sideways in the second turn and Dietrich was forced to the inside of the infield tire to keep control. Without lifting, the Racer’s Used Parts Warehouse #8D powered into the lead. The younger of the racing Hammakers recovered to hold onto second.

Just a half-lap later, third-place Palmerino flipped from the front stretch into the infield, bringing out the second red flag of the race. That’s when Dale Hammaker entered the picture.

As Dietrich was leading the next six laps, 10th-starting Dale Hammaker was disposing of Danny Dietrich, Moody, and finally his son to claim second. Hammaker then drove hard into turn one to take the lead on lap 18, forcing Dietrich to check up and lose valuable ground. The driver affectionately known as the "Godfather of the 358’s" appeared to be on his way to the win when the caution came out for a slowing Nicole Bower on the backstretch of lap 21. That’s when disaster struck.

Hammaker lost a rear end on the restart, and pulled into the infield on the restart, handing the lead back to Dietrich, who was actually running with a broken "W" link caused by one of the earlier brake checks.

"We got lucky, really," said Dietrich in victory lane, "I don’t know what happened to Dale, and I was happy running for second. But we've had our share of bad luck, too, so I’ll take it."

Shortly after Hammaker dropped from the field, four-time winner Brad McClelland also went to the infield under green.

Moody assumed second when Hammaker dropped out, and finished there for his best-ever Trail-Way "358" run. DS Diversified Services hard charger Jeff Rohrbaugh maintained his Trail-Way points lead by coming from 13th to third at the finish, with 12th-starting Davie Franek and Doug Hammaker completing the top five. The fifth-place finish was also Hammaker’s best ever Trail-Way run.

Sixth through tenth wree Danny Dietrich, Tim Wagaman, Austin Reed, Randy Davis, Jr., and 20th-starting Jessie Morrison.

Heats for the 30 "358" sprinters were won by Doug Hammaker, Danny Dietrich, Palmerino, and McClelland.
